The proposed storage scheme utilises the depleted gas reservoirs of the Caythorpe gas field.
The reservoirs will be re-pressured only to the level that existed prior to the start of production in 1992 and which had existed for many millions of years before that. The reservoirs have therefore proven their ability to contain gas at this pressure over geological time.
According to British Geological Survey, in 2004 there were 448 gas storage schemes using depleted oil or gas reservoirs worldwide. Independent consultants have stated that there is no evidence of any major safety issues associated with any of these schemes.
Warwick Energy will continue to work with designers, contractors, and the Health and Safety Executive to ensure the scheme has been designed and will be constructed and operated to the highest achievable levels of safety.
