This licence contains the Elswick gas field and the un-drilled Kirkham prospect. The Elswick field produces gas for a local power plant after the low permeability sandstone formation was hydraulically fractured. Planning permission for an exploration well on the Kirkham prospect has been granted by Lancashire County Council.
Warwick Energy has a minority interest in the Elswick generating station having previously fully owned and operated the project. The site, which utilises natural gas from the underlying Elswick gas field, has generated 1 MW of power from a Cooper Superior reciprocating gas engine since 1996. The operation was purchased by Warwick Energy in 2001.
The site is now owned and operated by Cuadrilla Resources.
